The engineer does a lot of creative work in that booth inwhich he should get credit because what he's doing IS very valuable and no 2 engineers are gonna output the exact same product. If you don't think the Engineer is valuable then why do you have one? LOL! They work closely with the Producer to acheive the sound of the recording. Engineering is both technical AND creative; whereas 'Mastering' is all technical and will not change the content of the product. The Engineer decides (along with the producer) all the highs and lows and of every voice and every note and even every bit of silence.
