Year of the Bull (a High Football Documentary film)

(Highlights only) This documentary paints a compelling portrait of Taurean Charles, a high school football player for Miami’s Northwestern Bulls. Located in Miami’s impoverished Liberty neighborhood, Northwestern high has a history as a breeding ground for college football and NFL players. Led to believe that football is his only ticket out, Charles focuses all his efforts on earning a place on a Division I collegiate team, letting his grades suffer in the process. But if Charles can’t raise his SAT score to meet the NCAA’s standards, he might never escape his inner city life. As Charles struggles to meet demands from his coaches, family, and society, he wonders who he can actually trust. YEAR OF THE BULL reveals the immense pressures facing poor black youth, and exposes the violent and cruel methods used by coaches to push young athletes.

    I thought the …
I thought the answer would be self-explanatory, but to understate it, my best guess is that most of these people and coaches grew up in environments of economic depression, not having a full mother + father family, so that it carries on and becomes a cycle. Furthermore, later in the movie, Taurean (upon arriving in Gainesville, FL) expressed relief at how peaceful the place was, that “he hasn’t seen anyone shot up, beat up, or even been in a fight there…”

It was a black HS in a poor neighborhood economically. Average household salary was probably 8000 a year or something. I saw the full film; even the principal in the game lived in a ghetto house.

yo dats what u need …
yo dats what u need sometimes. Coach to whoop yo . I played HS ball in Orlando, FL and our coaches got in our faces sometimes too, sometimes it got physical, that’s football for u… but they always stepped to us like men, aint nobody bigger than a team. I think T. Charles needed to know that, and I don’t think he ever really learned that… sad, a waste of talent.

    I didnt think this …
I didnt think this was really that bad….. anyone who plays football knows its not for kids who cant handle cussing or violence. Y do u think u wear full padded gear????? Sure the coach takes it over the top with tackling the kid but he had a point, after everyone sees the captain of the team stand up to the coach and give him then nobody will respect or listen to the coach

Lauddygirl you’re just another hater of The U! You’re probably a fan of some school who’s still stinging from the whoopings handed out by Miami. The U has lost so many recruits to other schools because they couldn’t qualify at UM academically it’s ridiculous. So hate on hater.
