Any suggestions for a 5 minute "in studio" tv production?

Monday, December 7th, 2009

I don’t want to do something typical like an interview or a news program. What could I do that’s more original? Keep in mind that I’m confined to a TV studio.

5 minute commentary. BTW, if you need to add color to a studio, if you have a skyline picture use that as a background.

can you recondmmend the essientials for a home studio besides the pc, mic and production software?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

I want to start a studio with my pc. I have nothing but the pc- I already know that I need a good mic and recording software- but what else do I need to make it as professional as can be? and can you also prefer the best inexpensive production equipment also?

good speaker system. sound proofing maybe?

Which name for a film studio/production company would you pick?

I noticed scratching sounds on Amy Winehouse’s Frank cd….poor studio production?

Monday, November 9th, 2009

the following tracks (all from frank cd) from winehouse’s frank and back to black four cd deluxe set have scratching sounds. I also noticed the same sounds on amazon’s sample version of frank deluxe and regular frank, explicit and clean versions.

Intro/stronger than me (you can hear it especially in the beginning)

know you now (you can hear it throughout the song)

take the box (original demo) (you can hear it in the beginning)

I am thinking "Frank" was not produced correctly like Back to Black was. Initially I thought I bought a defective cd but it seems that maybe that is how the music was produced. Any opinions or confirmations?

Sometimes an analog to digital conversion can leave that "hiss"/ scratch noise. *if it was recorded on a tape reel, and then transfered to computer*

However, a modern production technique is to deliberately add those static clicks in to give it a low-fi vintage vinyl feeling instead of the squeaky clean digital. (Example, Eminem’s The Way I Am).

I cant verify the Winehouse recordings though. Sorry.

First time stage manager looking for tips on small studio production of "The Curious Savage"?

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I’ve been an ASM for productions of "Les Miserables" and "Once upon a Mattress" and I’ve been handed the responsibility for a pretty low key production of "The Curious Savage". Any words of advice from experienced people about this show specifically or just stage management in general? I appreciate any help I can get!

If you have already had an ASM position, then you already have some of the skills in place. I don’t know ‘The Curious Savage’, but treat it the same way you would any production. Listen, write important things down, pass on information to relevant departments, try and anticipate what is needed. If you know a particular scene or act is rehearsing the next day, or in the afternoon, try and have everything ready before the director and company arrive. As soon as a prop is asked for, do your best to supply it - even if it is just a piece of paper to represent a letter.
It is difficult, but try to remain discretely in the background quietly getting on with your job whilst at the same time being in just the right place at the right time when needed. If an actor treats you as a lesser being (it happens - they don’t always realise just how useful we stage management can be!), be gracious and professional. Don’t be known for having an attitude - let others have that reputation! Enjoy what you are doing and have fun.

Question about studio music production?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

I know nothing about it, and was wondering if someone could explain to me basically what all this means:

1. mixing a song
2. compressing a song
3. mastering a song

THANKS!!

it’s not easy to explain in a short post

Mixing, is the Engineer’s job
he set the controls, during the original recording

Compressing, can be done at any stage, during recording, or during the mastering.
It’s done the keep the volume relatively consistent
(keep out the "peaks")

mastering, is the final editing of the song,
when they do the final mixing of the tracks, down to stereo

each is an art unto it’s own
and not that easy to learn

which is why I am so "anti" stealing music
if people really knew how hard these people work
they wouldn’t expect everything "fer freeee"

Music Production studio?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

I need advice on setting up a home studio so that I can start Producing Music, but don’t what I need to get started becuase I’m a newbie to this whole thing so what would are the tools I need in order to get started? The Music I’m trying to Produce is HipHop. Also what exactly is the MPC for, is it like a drum machine of some sort? I’m new to this so I’m trying to get some knowledge in order for me to get started.

-thanks in advance

The MPC is from the Akai series of Midi sequencers. It has little rubber square pads you tap on to enter drum notes (typically) A lot of hip-hop guys still use the MPC stuff because it’s easy to use, although quite limited. That being said, lots of great records have been, and are still being made using it. It’s good for trigggering samples, and drum sounds, but if you are entering keyboard parts etc, you’ll also need a midi keyboard and something to generate those sounds.

Depending on what kind of musician you are, that may be fine, but since you have a computer already, take a look at some entry level midi sequencing software like Reason, or Sonar Home Studio (or one of Cakewalk’s other programs.) You should get yourself a cheap USB midi keyboard so you can play the notes etc instead of entering them with a mouse or computer keyboard.

What film production studio’s logo animation looks like an architectural drawing?

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I know I’ve seen it somewhere… You know, the logo before the movie starts. And the words of the company’s name is sketchy and looks hand-drawn? I think "studio" might be in the name.

Walt Disney Studios.
