Documentary films. Looking for ideas… honest nice answers only, please.?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Okay, so, you’re thinking… documentary films… boring! Well, I got into documentary films about a year ago, and prior to that, I wasn’t really interested in them. The more I see different ones, the more I like them - and now I’m kind of addicted. SO… here is my comment, then question. Comment: Right now, I’ve been watching "The Corporation" on HULU, and I’ve watched it like, six times (maybe more.) I think it’s the most amazing documentary I’ve ever seen in my LIFE. "The Corporation" is free on HULU. Then, I am also ‘now’ addicted to watching "No End In Sight" - another documentary. I bought No End in Sight, and I’ve watched that one a good five times now. I should note, I like watching any kind of documentary, and I love all different kinds of movies, TV, etc. It’s just that some documentary films I’m seeing are so interesting, I’m amazed. So, those are my two favorites for past month or two. QUESTION: Are there any must-see documentaries I’m missing… anything you’ve seen that you would suggest as some doc that ‘blew you away’ ? If you’ve seen a ‘must-see’ documentary - what would you suggest? Honest question, hoping for honest (nice) answers… Thanks!
I am LOVING all these suggestions! Thank you so much! Great group of folks! (I’ve seen about half of those mentoned, but, I still - wow - thanks for ALL the great suggestions. Picking ‘Best Answer" isn’t going to be easy on this one! I didn’t expect more than one or two people to respond. Thanks everyone! You make me smile! :)
"We shall remain" is the best doc i’ve seen in a long time. History of Native Americans and the first Whites in America

General restrictions for a indie documentary film crew?

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

I am getting ready to film a documentary film and was wondering if there are any legal requirements. This is not a big production with lots of crew. Just 3 people and all equipment will be portable. We will not need to block traffic or anything. Mainly just interviews. Some filming will be in public places like parks and sidewalks. Do I need a permit from the city. Technically, the filming will take place over a year, so again, not a huge production.

Many people shoot guerrilla style films without hassle if they don’t get caught, but if you want to be above board then you should speak to your local council office as they may require you to have public liability insurance.

Brittany Murphy’s post-production films ?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

What is going to happen to Brittany Murphy’s films that she was making but then died?

She was making:
The Expendables (2010) (post-production) …. Amy
Something Wicked (2010) (post-production) …. Susan
Abandoned (2009) (post-production) …. Mary

so what will happen to those movies?

well it depends how far along they got. if it was quite alot, they might put a fill in for her, like they did for heath ledger in the imaginarium of dr parnassus. or they could always just re-shoot the movie, or change the story line up.

Estimating both educationally and by the standard of life…
Thanks for detailed answers and assistance.

My brother is a year older than me and is leaving college now and applying for uni’s. He also wants to follow a career in television so the uni’s I know he’s looked at are Bournemouth and Ravensbourne (I dunno if these are the correct spellings). He said Ravensbourne seems the best for television and that is his first choice . . . if you are at college then ask your film teacher for advice or the college careers advice person or something. Good luck applying :D

Is Israel planning a New Year attack on Iran?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

Submitted by Bill Weinberg on Sat, 10/17/2009 - 22:00.

Israel is planning military attacks on Iran after December, the French magazine Le Canard Enchainé asserted Oct. 13. According to the report, quoted by Israel Radio, Jerusalem has already ordered from a
French food manufacturer combat rations for soldiers serving in elite units, and asked reservists of these units staying abroad to return to Israel. The report also states that in a recent visit to France, IDF Chief of General Staff Gabi Ashkenazi told his French counterpart Jean-Louis Georgelin that Israel is not planning to bomb Iran, but may send elite units to conduct ground operations there. The magazine suggests these may involve sabotage of nuclear facilities and assassinations of Iran’s top nuclear scientists. (
ANI, Oct. 15)

The supposed leak comes simultaneous with news that the US military is speeding up delivery of a colossal "bunker-buster" bomb dubbed the Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP)—to be the largest non-nuclear bomb in the Pentagon arsenal, carrying 5,300 pounds of explosives. The Pentagon has awarded a $52 million contract to speed placement of the MOP aboard the B-2 Stealth bomber, and officials say it could be fielded as soon as next summer. It is to be 10 times more powerful than the weapon it is designed to replace, the BLU-109. Media speculation suggests it is intended for the newly revealed nuclear site the Iranian regime has built deep inside a mountain near the holy city of Qom. Officials deny there is a specific target in mind. "I don’t think anybody can divine potential targets," said Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell. "This is just a capability that we think is necessary given the world we live in." (Daily Mail, Oct. 13)

Israel elite troops ? Hell they could not even beat unarmed civilians in Gaza and dare I mention the Lebanon ? Perhaps a suicide mission would be nearer the truth. !

Should Indian cricketers be made to do less commercial advertising and concentrate on cricket?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I feel that maybe these guys spend too much time in front of the camera instead of concentrating on their chosen sport and it shows. What are your comments on this
Edit> it may be an additional talent underarm but how does it help in them playing more consistant cricket?

You bet. I am tried of seeing Donkey’s face everytime I turn on the idiot box. He speaks english in such an amusing accent that most of the time I cant help but laugh my butt off. You should have seen that Aircel ad by Dhoni. He should join the circus with Harbhajan and Sreesanth.

Does anyone know of any films–documentary or fictionalized accounts–about europe’s Muslim ghetto life?

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

It seems that even europeans make films about how horrible life is in the US, but I don’t seem to recall anything that depicts the racist, xenophobic, poverty-wrecked lives of minorities in europe–post-WW2 that is.

One of my favourites: La Haîne - French film by Mathieu Kassovitz. Not strictly Muslim - but ghetto life in Paris suburbs. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113247/
Also, The Promise, by the Dardennes brothers: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117398/

How long does Pre-Production and Post-Production of a film usually take?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

Like in a live-action film or a cel, computer, clay, or stop motion animated film. Just the simple duration of those stages. I would also like to know how long distribution and sales goes for.

For pre-production, if you start counting from the moment the writer starts the script to the 1st day of principal photography- probably the average for a feature film is 5-10 years, some longer, some less.
In post, its usually a month for editing, a month for sound, a month for cc and final mix, but of course if there are any visual effects that will add quite a bit of time.
A distribution deal is usually reached before the film starts shooting and is considered pre-production.

is atlanta a good place to move to obtain a job in television production?

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

I am goin to school for a degree in mass communication ( radio & Television). what are the top cities to get a job in this field

I would think the top Nielsen markets like NY, Los Angeles, Chicago ….. Atlanta is probably better than some cities (like Tampa) but not as good as others. There are several talk shows and such originating from here, so you may have a shot. But from my experience when I was a NYC publicist, those jobs are hard to come by and connections can’t hurt.
