Should cable TV be forced to tone down violent and sexual content in the way that broadcast television is?

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Since cable TV is not free, and can be parentally controlled, does this, in your mind, provide enough to create this separation between these two Media delivery vehicles?

its called freedom of choice you don’t like what your watching simply change the channel
if you don’t want your kids to watch that station simply lock it

can anyone provide me with some useful websites about the making of documentary films?

Question about studio music production?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

I know nothing about it, and was wondering if someone could explain to me basically what all this means:

1. mixing a song
2. compressing a song
3. mastering a song

THANKS!!

it’s not easy to explain in a short post

Mixing, is the Engineer’s job
he set the controls, during the original recording

Compressing, can be done at any stage, during recording, or during the mastering.
It’s done the keep the volume relatively consistent
(keep out the "peaks")

mastering, is the final editing of the song,
when they do the final mixing of the tracks, down to stereo

each is an art unto it’s own
and not that easy to learn

which is why I am so "anti" stealing music
if people really knew how hard these people work
they wouldn’t expect everything "fer freeee"

a couple of days probably

I have an employee that refused to participate in a photo shoot to be used for commercial advertising.?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

I have 6 employees and wanted to get a pic of all so that I could use it in a commercial spot. This particular employee stood everyone up this morning by not showing up for the shoot. I rescheduled it for 1, and he stopped by the office while I was gone to lunch and my secretary explained to him the importance of him being here because we are a team unit. He was very rude to her and said, "What’s he gonna do, fire me?" in front of several other employees. I did not email him his work for tomorrow and he called. I explained that the picture was mandantory and he needed to participate, or else bring his keys and personal items to work. He asked if I was firing him, and I left it that I assumed by his not participating that he was throwing in the towel, as he has been on a downward slump for several months bragging about how little he does to other employees and telling him that he hopes he gets fired so he can draw unemployment. What do you make of this as far as an unemployment claim?
I appreciate all of the response. I have decided to write him and explain that I understand his right to refuse to be photographed, and that he may continue to have his job. I also appreciate all of the excellent advice on the proper way to follow this up to protect my own interest. Thanks!

You should check with a lawyer in your state. It is unlikely that he has the right not to be photographed under the "at will" doctrine in the U.S. However, there may be some case law to the contrary in your state. In general you can fire they guy simply because you wanted to have the experience of firing someone — just as long as you don’t do so in violation of the exceptions to at will employment in effect in your state (e.g. discrimination, whistle blowing).

However, if you fire someone because you just feel like it, he’s going to be able to collect unemployment and drive up your rates.

The facts suggest that a termination with cause is in order here.

A lawyer could help you built a "with cause" file to document a termination with cause. Be sure to document every bad act you have up to this point. When you go to the lawyer, be ready to say "ON may 1, 2007, he said this and A, B, and C heard it."

What kind of firm will assist in the submission process for a documentary film to a network such as PBS?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

My company is trying to submit a completed documentary film to be considered for TV programming (PBS, NOVA, History Channel, etc). I’m familiar with PR firms who help promote authors to the media and such, but I want to know if anyone knows of specific firms we can consult throughout the submission process, contact networks on our behalf, guide us in creation of our proposal package, etc. All thoughts and ideas are welcome. Thanks!

I’m not familiar with the process myself, but forwarded your question to my daughter, who works for an emmy-award winning documentarian. She says:

"You are better off promoting it yourself.

They don’t necessarily like firms, since that means outside money for outside purposes.

The boss had his best success calling, and calling, and writing, and visiting, and calling some more."

Perhaps that doesn’t answer the question directly, but I’m hoping it provides a helpful perspective.

Music Production studio?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

I need advice on setting up a home studio so that I can start Producing Music, but don’t what I need to get started becuase I’m a newbie to this whole thing so what would are the tools I need in order to get started? The Music I’m trying to Produce is HipHop. Also what exactly is the MPC for, is it like a drum machine of some sort? I’m new to this so I’m trying to get some knowledge in order for me to get started.

-thanks in advance

The MPC is from the Akai series of Midi sequencers. It has little rubber square pads you tap on to enter drum notes (typically) A lot of hip-hop guys still use the MPC stuff because it’s easy to use, although quite limited. That being said, lots of great records have been, and are still being made using it. It’s good for trigggering samples, and drum sounds, but if you are entering keyboard parts etc, you’ll also need a midi keyboard and something to generate those sounds.

Depending on what kind of musician you are, that may be fine, but since you have a computer already, take a look at some entry level midi sequencing software like Reason, or Sonar Home Studio (or one of Cakewalk’s other programs.) You should get yourself a cheap USB midi keyboard so you can play the notes etc instead of entering them with a mouse or computer keyboard.
