Can i get work experience for film or television production?

July 3rd, 2010

I am finishing college soon and i am moving onto film & television Production at Uni. I Would love to get work experience during the summer holidays but realise it may be too late this year, so next year would be good too. Where could i gain work experience during the summer holidays when i don’t have a degree and i am not sure which part of production i wish to progress into. Any placement would be awesome because it’s all experience and i want to end up in that area of work.

Where can I get free music production software?

June 30th, 2010

I have a load of song ideas in my head, but I can’t express them because I can’t afford a musical instrument. I know there’s loads of studio production software, but that’s expensive too. Is there anyway I could get some of it for free?

Try out FL Studio (PC only). Here’s a free demo: http://flstudio.image-line.com/documents/download.html

The demo is pretty generous, the main restriction is you cannot re-open a saved project until you purchase a license for it. But you should be able to express your ideas well with the demo. Keep in mind great ideas are hard translate exactly if you don’t know much about music theory and mixing techniques. So don’t be frustrated if things don’t sound the same as you expect.

If you later can purchase one of the full editions, here’s an instant 10% discount you can use when you buy directly from the developers of FL at Image-Line:
https://support.image-line.com/jshop/shop.php?offer=Default&promo=BFHEHAH486

Otherwise, you can also try audacity to see if you like that program too: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

good luck

What would your reaction be if you caught me watching porno on Camp Rock 2’s post production?

Which unions are involved in Hollywood film and television production?

June 15th, 2010

Many of them, because making a movie requires a lot of different skills, and almost every kind of skilled worker has their own union.

If you only want to know about the actors’ unions, that would be SAG (the Screen Actors Guild) for movie actors, and AFTRA (the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists) for TV actors.

What is the difference between Commercial/Advertising Art Major and Design&Visual Communication Major?

June 15th, 2010

I was looking at Collegeboard and I saw these two different majors that I am both strongly interested in.
Which one fits better to pursue into becoming an art director or a creative director?

Well, the majors aren’t called that at colleges. that’s just collegeboard. the degrees are BA fine art, BFA fine art, art history, graphic design, interior design, illustration design, museum studies, art director, and art managment. those are in the art department.

In the business department, there’s visual communications. it usually breaks down into design based marketing, web design, etc. You take a couple arts courses, but the majority is business and computer science classes.

if you want to be and art director, you need to to art history with a minor in business or art criticism or some colleges have arts management majors which teach you specifically about art and how to market it/represent an artist. it merges art/art history/marketing/and business.

If you are more interested in web design, journalism, marketing, or just the business/tech side of the job then you can do visual communications. BUT it has LITTLE to do with art

what are the duties of a commercial manager in advertising?

June 4th, 2010

it is an upcoming newspaper and they have just hired a commercial manager to do advertising, business plans etc

Depends how many people are in that company. If has Advertising Director or advertising assistant then the responsibilities are less.

But basically the commercial manager will manage the financial aspects of all contracts. He/she will have good relationships with key clients, main contracts and consultants, and be proactive in his/her approach. Will help or close contract and manager a sales team.

Do you consider post production cheating?

May 29th, 2010

Most photos today are edited. Colours are saturated, exposure altered and items erased from a picture completely. And you can turn a boring picture into a great picture with just a few clicks of the button.

I recently started picniking my pics and have seen some great results and big differences between the edited and original. Just by a little bit of cropping and intensifying the colours slightly.

But do you think it’s cheating a little bit? How were brilliant pictures taken before photoshop, picnik and gimp?

Well your first sentence "Most photos today are edited" implies that post processing started with the advent of digital.

As most of the other answers say, that is simply not true. The vast majority (if not all) of the common tweaks in exposure (dodging & burning) and retouching have been done since the advent of photography!

Even HDR type exposure blending was done as early as the 1930’s (although the idea had been mooted in the 1850’s).

You also need to realise that the camera cannot capture what you can see - it just doesn’t have the ability of the combination of human eye & brain. Quite often I hear ’snapshot’ photographers looking at a scene they shot straight out of camera saying that it doesn’t look like they saw it (ie their eye saw it in more detail or with more colour/contrast). Hence then the need to try to get the post processing to better emulate what your eye saw.

Then there’s the artistic, creative side of photography (ie ‘making’ pictures, rather than ‘taking’ pictures) such as adding/removing elements of a scene which enhances the final image. Again if your intent is to create a particular scene or mood, then what of it? Only in ‘record’ photography is it strictly necessary to record, without adjustment, the scene. This again comes back to the purpose and intent of the photographer - to merely ‘capture’ a scene or to create a scene.

As far as glamour/fashion/celebrity photography goes, there has again always been a trend for photo retouching. All that happens now is that it’s done on computer rather than having to huddle in a dark room breathing chemicals. Although I do feel nostalgic when I get a whiff of fixer (!) I much prefer to sit in comfort & edit!

Having said all that though (phew!) Perki88 is spot on - a good photographer gets the basics right in camera - and a poor image will always be a poor image, Photoshop or not.
